    Yo! I'd like to share with you of my current free time eater..

    Back in march I got myself a birthday present 1990 318iS





    Bought her up in North, she looked so sweet I couldn't resist, few rust spots didn't put me off..

    I didn't do anything with her until few weeks ago, was gonna sort out few things for nct and start driving, but I spotted bit of rust on rear panel, started grinding and found out it was quite bad. So welder out!






    After that sorted I went looking at rear arches, and unfortunately the right one was very bad, I couldn't even fix it, had to get new one


    With this job ahead I decided I'll strip whole rear half of the car and sort all the rust I can find, I know I should do the whole car, but I want to drive it soon and I'm doin it in friends garage so don't want to take space for too long.
    Unfortunately fuel filler pipe is rotten too, and fuel tank has a hole. New pipe is 200eur, so need to get second hand one, I'll try to fix the tank

    much more rust to be sorted, that's the worst spot



    my exhaust manifold was leaking at two outer pipes, so got welded, some job to grind the welds inside pipes..




    can anyone tell me if it's an original manifold or is it some aftermarket/upgrade? what are the plugs for? they're blanket off with bolts at the moment. Just wondering as the rest of the exhaust is stainless, 'power flow' as far as I remember

    Well done on the car. That's some tidy work you've done. Keep us posted with updates.

    All IS's came with a stainless 4 branch as standard and a steel exhaust.

    Excellent job I have to do the same on my 86 baur inner an outer wheel arches tho ahh any advice on where to start ???

    Thanks lads! If I knew there's so much rust I wouldn't have bought this car, but now I stripped her and we're in love so have to keep going..

    Why BMW made them plugholes or what ya call them in the manifold?

    I'd be I interested in that filler neck Swin thx, do you have any more bits?

    I'm not a professional, this is my first job of this kind, you can tell by the welding

    So I started by reading other people's projects mostly on this site and some youtube instructions to get some knowledge
    The arch (I think I actually replaced the outer one) I started with wire wheel at the seamsealer on inner/outer arch bond, then drilled spotwelds - you need special drill bit, awkward job as some welds are hard to get to. You're welding new one in first to the quarter panel arch holding them together with some vicegrips, then to the inner arch - I think that's the proper order. I wouldn't really replace inner arch by myself, I'd say it's much more difficult.

    Got a bit more done yesterday. I had a good look at the tank, I don't think it's worth repairing, I've sourced one for 40 eur, so I'll go for that



    my rear beam, powdercoat or not? I'll get the job priced, I'd like to get rear anti r-b, springs and few brackets done as well, I don't know if I can afford all that..



    welding more brackets underneath, It'd be so much simpler if I had a spit, It's not nice to do lying on your back sparks flying down on ya..












    After grinding the welds and scraping rest of the rust I cover everything up with Bilt hamber rust converter



    after I finish with the rust I'll paint everything with epoxy primer and then cover it with seam sealer and stone chip, I got underbody and cavity wax as well, I'm not sure how all the stuff works, so need to make more research. As I said it's my first job like that, so if you think of anything I'm doing wrong, please let me know.

    I'm worried about this corrosion on chassis



    I plan to weld on pieces of 2mm gauge steel, angle shaped, to try strengthen the weakened by corrosion chassis, I don't want to move the spring plate, cause I'll never get it back on the same way, best thing would be to replace the chassis legs, but it's to big of a job for me (and to expensive as well)...

    Excellent work there Koza, and for your first time doing this sort of work you have taken on a lot. It's really coming along well done, I bet it's killing you not having it out on the road yet. It will be worth doing all this work now then enjoy the car later

    Bit of an update...

    The progress is slow, unfortunately I have very little free time lately to spend on the car, and with me being unexperienced with bodywork everything goes very slow, I thought I'll be driving her by now, and I'm not even half way there...

    anyway, this is how my chassis looked like around the rear spring



    I decided to weld in pieces made out of 2mm gauge steel



    hopefully I've done a good job





    I've done the same on both sides, even tough the left wasn't as badly corroded..

    left rear arch didn't look too bad, but after wire wheeling rust showed up



    I started on door sills/jacking points, only done one so far

    I cleaned up my rear suspension arms, and inspired by Xworks I welded in strengthening pieces




    of course I had to make the rear beam adjustable, hopefully it's gonna work




    all them parts together with anti-roll bar and few other bits are now sent to be sandblasted and powdercoated

    Jeysus why is it so slow... sometimes I wish I was on the dole

    Smashing job,very inspiring too
    Love the chassis reinforcement bracket.
    It's like you made reinforcement plates for e30 not e46 m3
    A serious project require time,enjoy as long it last
