    Default E30 help needed

    I am having a bit of bother with the idle on my car. Its a 1984 323i Baur.
    When idling, the rev counter shifts between 400rpm and about 1200rpm
    The car is spluttering when driving and cutting out when you clutch.

    Check all your vacuums... Sounds like you've a leak somewhere

    Maybe clean out the idle control valve and check for leaks in the intake hoses.

    Thanks guys. Found a perished pipe which I replaced. Still have the problem. Going to look at the air intake sensor next.

    Still can't locate the problem. The symptoms are as follows...
    Perfect idle when starting from cold. After approximately 25 miles you can start to feel a splutter. When you are changing gear, the revs are erratic. When you pull over the car cuts out completely. But this only happens after the car gets warm. Also when on low rev the lights all dim. It has cut out for a second or two on a few occasions as well. HELP would be gratefully appreciated.

    Few people have given their opinions. Some reckon it can't be the air intake as the problem is not constant. Some say it might be the fuel pump. Where should I start?

    Loose fan belt may explain dimming lights or worn brushes in your alternator. More than likely a fuel issue--could be faulty pump or clogged fuel filter. Electrical problems tend to be more terminal in that the car wont start until its resolved

    Have you checked the ecu/dme coolant sensor. If faulty it may be over fueling when warmed up, which could cause the above mentioned symptoms.

    Some may know this as the thermo time switch which controls the cold start injector on jetronic systems.

    Thanks for that. Will have a look to see if that could be the cause of some of these issues.

    No I haven't and coincidentally someone else suggested I look at this too. Will order a new one and see if it fixes it.

    Yeah id agree definitely try the blue coolant sensor. Cheap to change and they are know for going faulty and causing fueling problems on e30s. Get a decent brand one... I remember someone on here that said he went through a couple of cheap ones in a matter of months...
