    Default Defender- what year for classic?

    Hi guys!
    I'm looking to get an old defender. I have an e46 as my main car and an e30 (obviously) as my classic. What is the newest defender I can get whilst still retaining a classic car policy.

    it will vary depending on the insurance company, some 15 others up to 30. I would suggest calling you insurance company and see what they say,

    Just stick a nice TD5 one on a vintage chassis
    M42 RIGHTNESS.

    Had thought about that one myself but have not been able to find out what chassis to use and what mods need to be made.

    I was in a ZV reg plated LWB Defender last week. The owner told me the engine was and the chassis had been professionally made 10 inches longer. If you want I can get details for you.

    What body are you looking for (van/wagon/pickup/90/110), and what will you be using it for?

    This will affect what insurance you can/cant get.

    I used to own a 97 110 van, and they would only insure as a commercial. They also said they would not insure anything pre 97, and this was last year.

    Some are funny with cars over 10, 15 and 20 years old alright and especially if it's a commercial as it's deemed an old vehicle for using for work.

    Ive had two '03 110s for the last 5 years or so with no issues. first ones was a crewcab and current one is a "van"

    Thinking of buying or building a 130 within the next couple of years though and putting a TDV8 or Cummins in it and some other mods.

    My offroader is on a vintage plate but I haven't tried insuring it and taxing it yet

    Cheers for the responses. There is an 89 defender 90 on done deal ATM and looks to be in good condition. I will ring the insurance next week and see if they would insure it as a classic. It's 2 years older than my e30 so they should but the commercial thing could be an issue.

    Anything to look out for with defenders? Besides rust?

    Leaks, play in diff's, transfer case and gearbox.
    When viewing a defender, I would advise the use of one of those pipe inspection cameras. You want to check as much of the chassis as possible. They can rust from the inside out.
    Check the rear cross member.
    If its been used for work, check the condition of all bushings. They wear out and it could add up if your having to do lots of little jobs.
    Nasty smells that can never be got rid of. Ask me how I know about that.

    That a grey one?

    Looks good but not sure about the neon lights and 2.5" lift is alot for a 90 if it's going to be used on the road a fair bit and doesn't even need to be that high for what looks to be standard size BFG KM1 mud terrains. For the money, I think I'd hold out for something a little nicer and I'd try get a newer TD5 engined Defender for that kinda money

    I've only a 2" lift on mine and that's with 35x12.5 KM2s and still loads of clearance

    If I had a 90, I'd go with 33x12.5 tyres and just heavy duty standard height springs
