Default Opinions on Mercedes 190e

Hey,
Just wanted to know if anyone's had one and could tell me what they're like as a daily driver. In particular I'm looking for a 1.8 so any info on that engine would be very much appreciated

Default had a few

hi,ive had a few 190's.

good little car,bit boring in fact, not realy a drivers car.

but if you want a old skool motor there great, good cruzzer and with nice wheels and a bit of a drop.

1.8's are fairly dead on a carb set up,and watch out for 4spd gear boxes and wind up windows.

id go for the 190e,which is a 2.0 and is injected, again no ball of fire.

if looking at a auto, keep a eye on the gear change, slow to go up gears, and gear slip.

its a mercedes they say,and they are good as a car brand, but not that good, they do go wrong, and they do rust!

so buy with your eyes and not your heart.

merc wise ive had 190's/ 230ce coupes/300ce coupes/500sel's/560sec coupes etc, and ive always come back to bmw's,well never left them.

buy a early e36 and be done with it.

Mercedes 190E Cosworth
That's the one I'm looking at that in particular, I drive an e46 and love it but have always loved the boxy shapes from the late 80's like the e30 and the 190e. I have a project e30 at the moment and then saw this merc come up which is the perfect spec that if want but seems to be hard to find and that's why I'm asking about it

I just bought a 190e 2.0 auto. It will be a daily once I get it tested. You can pick them up pretty cheap compared to old BMW's.

I'd be keen to know how you get on with it as a daily!

Have always fancied a white one in Sportsline Spec, even if it was only 1.8 - I have a brochure somewhere in the attic

That's particular one is $10k if I recall.
Just Re sprayed and had all the amg aero parts fitted.

I'd love a cosworth, but they're now gone crazy $$$ too. I've been looking on the jap auctions, and you'd need $18-20k for a reasonable one. Evo II models are up over $100k

So yeah....1.8 is where it's at.

Yep, a cosworth would do just nicely.
Not a fan of the Evo II's. Almost swapped my Sport plus a bit of cash back in 2007 for a 2.5 Cosworth but the Insurance quote ended that deal.

The 1.8 Sportsline seem to be even rarer

I'll keep you posted. It's turning into another project. I've bought wheels for it and looking at a h&r cup kit for it. Doing a bit of general servicing at the minute. Drained oil and flushed the coolant this evening. Getting bits of rust sorted next week. Hoping to have it on the road mid August.
