OK, if you take a scale of poor/good/excellent, 5 grand will get you a good condition car.
Dont expect showroom condition, but on the other side of the coin, it should not need any major work.
Another tip is not to take a current NCT as evidence of good condition. You need to go and check the car from top to bottom.

Thanks for input Kenco. Much appreciated. I see an e30 318IS on the internet but when I log onto car reg.ie and enter the lience plate number it says "1990 3 series E36 318is should this not be E30 instead of E36? Plus the guy only has the car less than 3 months which sounds abit dodge.. looks clean from the the pic's though!

Some of those sites often mix up the model code. I have seen E30 used instead of E21 before.
As I said, dont rely on NCT or photos, go and check the car on a dry day in sunlight.
If your not confident in checking the car yourself, take someone in the know with you.

Remember that the e30 318is was never sold here and that all are UK imports. So when the car was being VRT'ed the person in the office registering the car may not have been able to find e30 318is and put it down as e36 318is instead because they are on the system.

Didn't know that. Kinda assumed that they were sold here as well but being Ireland very little were sold. You learn something everyday.

Dan, iS' are great cars but as the lads are saying you need to give it a good look over before buying. It is easy to make them look nice in the pictures.

Here's a thought, while you might find it difficult to find an e30 318is there is good value to be found in the E28. There are a few examples for sale at the minute that are well under your budget, but this isn't going to last for long they will start to rise again soon.

Don't rely on pictures.. or even what you are told over the phone..only way is to go look and as Ken said if you're not sure what to look out for bring someone (that knows e30s well would be great) that does.
First is I bought i went to Cork all excited..4 grand in my pocket..my "mechanic" got underneath for a 1min look..then says yeah she sound.. but in reality it was far from sound..
Not too many is up for sale at moment . post a link of any car you might be interested in and we might know it. I got a beaut of a is a few months ago(not for sale) so you just need a bit of luck.

That's not true.
I have an original Irish iS.

However, the model comes as "Other" in any online check so don't worry about that

You live and learn, and I've learned not to believe everything I read on this forum, which is where I got that nugget of misinformation.
