    Default E30 Engine specs

    M10
    Straight 4 cylinder SOHC 8V.
    Used in E30 316
    1.6 (85bhp)

    M20
    Straight 6 cylinder SOHC 12V.
    Used in E30
    2.0i (129bhp), 2.5i (170bhp)


    M40
    Straight 4 cylinder SOHC 8V. Replaced the M10lbs
    Used in post 87 E30 316i/318i
    1.6 (102bhp), 1.8 (122bhp)


    M42
    Straight 4 cylinder DOHC 16V.
    Used in E30 318is
    1.8 (138-142bhp)

    S14 (The daddy of them all)
    Straight 4 DOHC 16V Solid Lifter Valvetrain and Individual Throttle Bodies. 1987-1991.
    Used in the E30 M3 and Italian only E30 320is
    2.0L (195bhp) 2.3L (195-220bhp), 2.5L (238bhp)


    I think i have missed out on some details,but it may be a reference point for people to work from

    dont mean to be anal but the 2.5 was only ever 238bhp

    2.3's were (depending on the car) 195bhp to 220bhp

    is there realy that much of a power difference between the m40 1.6 and 1.8

    Hmm. Looking at it now it does look a bit odd. I could have always sworn the early 1.8 engines had 105 bhp and the later 1.8 engines had 115 bhp.

    The M42 was used in early e36 318is' too.
    But saying that, this is an E30 site so ye prob don't give a rats ass...!!!

    an e 30 site? never!

    have never actually had an e30 as my daily driver, and theres 6 of them in the yard at the moment!
    theres also
    1 e36,
    2 518,
    2 mercs 180's,
    1 nissan laurel,
    1 silvia,
    1 mk 2,
    1 volvo 740,
    oh and nearly forgot the ould nissan vanette!
    am i addicted to rwd?!!

    The original E30 M10 was 1.8 (1766cc). The earlier 316 wasn't 1.6 but
    1766cc. The M10 was never made in 1.6 litre capacity. The later 316
    which has 1600cc was an M40 based block.

    M40 is fuel injected so has an AFM, airbox down in front of the passenger wheelarch and an intake plenum over the top of the engine
    M42 RIGHTNESS.

    Not neccessarily so. The early (chrome bumpered) fuel injected 318i used an M10 block too.
    The 318 (with no "i") used a Solex carb.
